Healthy Fats

Dietary fats carry energy, help absorb vitamins, support hormones, and make meals satisfying. The goal is intentional fats — not fear, not free-pouring oil.

💬 Buddy Tip

Measure cooking oils for a week. Most “mystery calories” hide in the pan and the dressing bottle.

🎯 Today's Mission

Log oils, butter, sauces, and nut butters carefully today — even the “just a splash.”

WHY?

Why this matters

Fat is energy-dense: small volumes add up fast. That is why home cooking can stall fat loss even when plates “look clean.” Awareness beats avoidance.

Not all fats behave the same in a health pattern. Emphasising unsaturated sources (olive oil, nuts, seeds, fatty fish) while keeping room for foods you love is more sustainable than purging every saturated gram overnight.

Very low-fat diets can leave meals unsatisfying and harm adherence. Extremely high-fat patterns can crowd out protein and fibre. Balance serves the Health Operating System better than ideology.

WHAT?

What to understand

Work with fats as tools.

  1. 1

Log oils, butter, cream, cheese, nuts, seeds, and dressings — they count

  2. 2

Use fats to improve adherence: a measured drizzle can make vegetables stick

  3. 3

Fatty fish offers fats plus protein — strong dual-purpose foods

  4. 4

Nuts are nutritious and easy to overeat from the bag — portion them

  5. 5

Restaurant meals often carry invisible fats; estimate honestly

Myth
Fat-free products are always better for weight loss.

Truth: Many replace fat with sugar or refined starch and leave you hungrier. Check the whole food.

Myth
If it’s olive oil, quantity doesn’t matter.

Truth: Quality helps health patterns; energy still counts. Measure the pour.

HOW?

How to do this in real life

Get accurate for two weeks, then keep the skill.

  1. 1

Use a teaspoon or spray awareness for pan oil

  2. 2

Pre-portion nuts and cheese instead of eating from large packages

  3. 3

Build plates protein + fibre first, then add fat for satisfaction

  4. 4

When eating out, assume oil and log a reasonable extra rather than zero

  5. 5

Review weekly: were fats intentional or accidental?

How Buddy helps

Buddy estimates improve when you mention oils and dressings in voice or confirm them after a photo. Foodiary edits catch systematic under-logging.

Satiety role

Fats slow digestion and improve meal enjoyment. A meal that is only lean protein and dry vegetables may be “on plan” and still fail because you cannot repeat it.

Find the minimum effective fat that keeps meals pleasant inside your energy budget.

Heart-health framing (plain language)

Overall pattern matters: plants, fibre, fish, and fewer ultra-processed foods usually matter more than terrorising one butter serving.

If you have a medical condition, follow clinician guidance — Buddy coaches habits, not prescriptions.
