TEF
TEF — the thermic effect of food — is the energy your body uses to digest and process what you eat. It is one reason equal calories from different foods do not feel or perform the same.
Use TEF as a reason to favour protein-rich, whole meals — not as a loophole to eat endless food because “digestion burns it.”
Swap one refined snack for a protein-plus-fibre mini-meal and notice fullness two hours later.
Why this matters
Digesting protein typically costs more energy than digesting fat or refined carbohydrate. High-protein patterns therefore return a slightly smaller net energy yield — helpful, but not magic.
Whole foods with fibre also tend to take more work to process and improve satiety. Ultra-processed refined combinations often deliver energy with less chewing, less fullness, and easier overeating.
kCal Buddy teaches TEF so you stop treating all calories as identical experiences. Physics still counts; food information changes the lived outcome.
What to understand
TEF in plain coaching language.
- 1
Protein has a higher thermic effect than fat or refined carbs on average
- 2
TEF is a nudge, not a free pass to ignore portions
- 3
Meal size and composition both influence digestion cost and fullness
- 4
Liquid calories often produce less satiety per kcal than solid meals
- 5
Combine TEF thinking with protein, fibre, and energy budget — never TEF alone
Truth: Those effects are tiny next to total intake, protein pattern, and movement.
Truth: Protein still contains energy. Unlimited anything usually breaks the budget.
How to do this in real life
Let TEF shape defaults, not spreadsheets.
- 1
Build meals around protein and plants first
- 2
Prefer solid meals over grazing on refined snacks when hunger is real
- 3
Keep ultra-processed convenience foods intentional, not accidental defaults
- 4
Log honestly — TEF does not erase unlogged oils and drinks
- 5
Judge success by adherence and weekly trends, not by imagining burned digestion calories
Buddy’s food-quality teaching (protein, fibre, leucine) is TEF-aware coaching without forcing you to calculate percentages after every bite.
Where TEF fits in energy out
Total daily energy expenditure includes basal metabolism, movement, and TEF. Movement and body size usually dwarf TEF — so walk and train too.
Still, choosing higher-TEF, higher-satiety meals makes a calorie budget easier to keep. Ease is the real advantage.
Coca-Cola vs real-food example
Equal calories from sugary drinks versus a protein- and fibre-rich plate differ in hunger, recovery, and how likely you are to keep eating.
That difference is food information — TEF is one piece of it.
Common mistakes
-
“I drank a protein shake and assumed TEF cancelled the calories.”
TEF reduces net yield slightly; it does not zero the shake.
-
“I chase metabolism hacks instead of logging dinner.”
Capture beats hacks. TEF only helps inside an honest diary.
-
“If TEF matters, I’ll eat six tiny meals no matter what.”
Meal frequency is preference. Total composition and energy matter more than forced grazing.
Remember TEF when you build plates: protein and plants earn their keep. Then return to the simple loop — log, learn, adjust.
