Calories

Calories are physics: energy in versus energy out shapes body energy stores. They are necessary — and incomplete — until you pair them with food quality and your real-life burn.

💬 Buddy Tip

Treat daily calories as a budget range, not a moral score. Weekly averages teach more than any single day.

🎯 Today's Mission

Log every energy-containing item today — including oils, drinks, and “bites” — without editing the story.

WHY?

Why this matters

Energy balance still matters. If intake stays above what you expend for long enough, stores rise; if below, they tend to fall. Denying calories does not make healthier coaching — it makes confused coaching.

Equal calories are not equal experiences. 1000 kcal from sugary drinks and 1000 kcal from protein- and fibre-rich meals hit hunger, recovery, and muscle repair differently. Calories measure energy; they do not fully describe information in food.

Generic calculators guess. Your weight trend plus honest intake teaches Buddy a Personal Burning Rate under your actual life — work, walking, training, stress — which is more useful than a textbook formula alone.

WHAT?

What to understand

What to keep in mind when working with calories.

  1. 1

Calories estimate metabolisable energy — useful, approximate, and sensitive to portion error

  2. 2

Body weight day-to-day is mostly water and glycogen noise; fat change is slower

  3. 3

Under-logging (oils, drinks, tastes) is the most common “mystery stall”

  4. 4

Wearable calorie burn is context, not automatic truth

  5. 5

Protein, fibre, and meal pattern change how a calorie budget feels to live

Myth
If I hit calories exactly, composition doesn’t matter.

Truth: Composition changes satiety, training quality, and adherence. Energy balance and food quality work together.

Myth
Exercise calories on my watch mean I earned a matching feast.

Truth: Wearables often overestimate. Prefer trend-based adjustments over matching every workout calorie.

HOW?

How to do this in real life

Use calories as a steering wheel, not a courtroom.

  1. 1

Log meals near the time you eat so portions stay realistic

  2. 2

Include cooking fats, sauces, alcohol, and milky drinks

  3. 3

Aim for a consistent weekly average rather than perfect daily hits

  4. 4

Compare multi-week weight trend to intake before big target changes

  5. 5

When hungry on a “correct” calorie day, check protein, fibre, sleep, and steps first

How Buddy helps

Buddy estimates help you capture energy quickly; Foodiary lets you refine grams. Progress shows whether your budget matches reality over time.

Budgets and ranges

A range (for example a band around a target) reduces anxiety and matches real portion uncertainty. Obsessive exactness often increases binge risk.

During early learning weeks, prioritise complete logs over aggressive deficits so Buddy can see your true baseline.

When numbers disagree with the scale

First check logging gaps and sodium/carb swings. Then check adherence length. Only then adjust the budget.

Patience is a skill. Three noisy days are not a new metabolism.

❤️ Encouragement

You do not need to fear calories. You need to understand them well enough to stop guessing — and kindly enough to keep logging tomorrow.
